The Graduate Diploma in Advanced Flying takes the equivalent of 1 year of full-time study, but may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. This program is only available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens. The Graduate Diploma in Advanced Flying is a program designed to meet the needs of graduates with an ambition toward a career as an airline pilot.
This program provides the ground and simulator training which is required for pilots by airlines prior to type endorsement. The core training includes the concepts and practices of Multi-Crew-Coordination, and training in Aeroplane Systems required for a pilot to operate an airline category aeroplane as a pilot. In addition to specific training as above, award of the Diploma will require satisfactory completion of four related aviation postgraduate theory courses. The student also needs to understand core aspects of the theory of aviation safety, and this will be acquired through studying existing additional School of Aviation postgraduate courses.
Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes are;
- Graduates will be equipped with a breadth and depth of generic, disciplinary and specific knowledge and skills which can be applied to a range of
- complex contexts associated with operating an airline category aeroplane safely as a pilot,
- Graduates will have developed an understanding of enquiry-based learning and demonstrate analytical skills, and
- Graduates will have developed a level of critical thinking and problem solving skills in the areas of aviation safety and pilot performance.
This program requires the satisfactory completion of 48 Units of Credit (UoC), comprised of two compulsory training courses:
- AVIF5915 Multi Crew Coordination (12 UoC) - Full time attendance required
- AVIF5916 Aeroplane Systems (12 UoC) - Full time attendance required
Each of which is available for enrolment both Session1 and Session 2, and 24 UoC of Graduate level Aviation courses, chosen from:
- AVIA5015 Safety Management Systems (6 UOC)
- AVIA5018 Aviation Human Factors (6 UOC)
- AVIA5022 Aircraft Accident Investigation Techniques (6 UOC)
- AVIA5024 Flight Deck Ops for Advanced Transport Aircraft (6 UOC)
- AVIA5039 Airworthiness for Transport Category Aircraft (6 UOC)
Applicants who have completed the following cognate degrees will be given 12 UoC advanced standing toward the 24 UoC of required AVIA courses.
- Bachelor of Aviation (Management or Flying)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Aeronautical or Aerospace)
Additionally, applicants who have completed the Multi-Crew Coordination (MCC) training in AVIA3014 of the BAvFlying will be given 12 UoC advanced standing for AVIF5915 Multi Crew Coordination course.
Students are charged tuition fees for each of the courses in the program, and 2018 rates can be viewed at Tuition Fees 2018: UNSW Science for Domestic Full Fee-Paying table. Note the rate charged for ‘AVIF’ courses, ie AVIF5915 and AVIF5916, is different to ‘AVIA’ courses due to the intense one on one training in simulators delivered as part of the AVIF course curriculum.
A FEE-HELP loan scheme is available to eligible students to assist with payment of these fees up to the FEE-HELP limit which is $103,392 in 2018. Eligibility requirements, limits and application procedures for FEE-HELP loans apply.
The fees indicated below are for each postgraduate AVIF and AVIA course. Fees are based on a cost per Unit of Credit (UoC) of AUD $635 for AVIA courses and AUD$ 1,160 for AVIF courses. For further information, please visit the UNSW Fees and Payment website.

- Hold a Commercial Pilot Licence
- Hold or have recently held a Command Instrument Rating (Multi-Engine)
- A pass in all theory components of the Air Transport Pilot Licence
- Attend and pass the School interview

UNSW holds an Air Operators Certificate for flying training issued under CASR Parts 141/142. Safety and quality of training are of first priority. All training is managed by the University’s Head of Operations and in accordance with a precise syllabus approved by CASA. Flight training includes ongoing monitoring of students and instructors proficiency, with the student progression being dependent on the attainment of specific achievement levels at the end of each phase.
The duration of this program depends on which pattern of attendance option is selected. Assessment for AVIF5915 and AVIF5916 will include practical assessments of capability on the simulation equipment used for training as well as academic knowledge.
The UNSW Flying Operations Unit is based at Bankstown Airport, and operates Diamond DA40 and Piper PA44 training aeroplanes, fitted with the Garmin G1000 flight display/navigation systems. The FOU also operates a FRASCA flight training device fitted with the Garmin G1000 systems, as well as a Pacific Simulators PS4.5 FTD for Multi-Crew Coordination training and an Aerosim flat panel systems trainer for the DASH-8 Q400.
At this stage enrolment in this program does not give any official advantage to applicants seeking later appointment as a pilot in any airline. However, completion of the Graduate Diploma in Advanced Flying indicates an ongoing motivation for a career as a pilot, and provides a greater depth of background, which overall may provide a competitive edge to Direct Entry pilot applicants of any airlines.
Further articulation into the Master of Aviation Management (Program 8741)
Students completing the Graduate Diploma in Advanced Flying will be granted 48 UoC toward the Master of Aviation Management (MAvMgmt) Program 8741, and will then need to undertake another 48 UoC to be awarded the Masters degree. Note: the program will be available to Local students only. Courses AVIA5015, AVIA5018, AVIA5022, AVIA5024 and AVIA5039 are offered in distance mode. AVIF5915 and AVIF5916 require attendance in Sydney.
